Advice For Growing A Better Organic Garden

In order for you to have a successful organic garden, you will need to take really good care of it. Gardeners need to use all the information they can to create and tend to their organic garden. While the garden itself is important, your real goal is to grow great tasting produce that is healthy and does no harm to the environment or the consumer. The tips in this article should start you on the road to doing just that with a successful organic garden.

Your first and best line of defense against pests is having healthy soil. If your plants are healthy, they can more easily resist insects and disease. You want to cultivate quality soil with adequate salt levels, which leads to healthy plants.

If you have a vegetable garden, it is crucial they are kept in a spot with at least six hours of sun each day. Many vegetables need about this much sun to grow quickly. Some flowers also have the same needs.

Get gardening knee pads if you have low-growing plants. You will end up spending a good deal of time on your knees and this can cause a lot of pain by the end of the day. Knee pads offer your knees the extra cushioning they need to stay comfortable during extended periods in the garden.

For weeds that aren’t in the middle of your plants, use boiling water to kill their roots. A pot of very hot water is one of the most effective ways you can get rid of the weeds in your garden. Pour the boiling water directly onto the weeds, just make sure you do not damage the nearby plants. Boiling water can hurt the roots of weeds and can prevent them from growing.

There are many natural substances that are effective for warding off unwanted visitors. Slugs can be kept at bay with a patch of marigolds or pungent vegetables. Wood ash also makes a great insect deterrent; simply use it as mulch around your shrub and tree seedlings. You can avoid using pesticides that contain harsh chemicals if you employ these techniques.

Place at least an inch of mulch that is organic in with your veggies! The mulch will keep the soil around the plants moist a little longer. It will also prevent the growth of weeds. You will benefit by not having to spend so much time fighting weed growth.

Try to relax with gardening. There are a wide variety of things you can do to release stress and relax. Gardening is an excellent choice for calming your mind and soul. Gardening only requires a small investment and you will get so much more out of it. One particularly enjoyable return is the pride you will feel when you grow your own food.

If you’re planning on gardening inside, the first thing you should consider is an adequate light source. If you want indoor plants, choose specimens that can grow in relatively dark places. If you do and this does not help, consider investing in some grow-lights.

Do not be in a rush when you plant your seeds. First, add moisture to the soil where you will be planting. Plant the seeds evenly to ensure that they have ample room to grow. Bury your seeds about three times deeper than the size that they are. Some seeds you do not want to bury because they require light in order to grow.

To be as efficient as possible in the garden, always have your tools handy. Keep the tools in a big bucket, or store them in strong pockets in your pants. Make sure your trowel, pruning shears, gloves and other important tools are always handy. This will allow you to make easy work of your gardening up-keep!

Coffee grounds can benefit many types of soil. Coffee grounds are filled with nitrogen, that is a nutrient required by plants. Nitrogen is a nutrient that will help your plants grow taller and bloom faster, so use those coffee grounds, extra compost, or diluted urea to make this happen.

Do you prefer to eliminate weeds without the use of harmful chemicals? Take layers of newspapers and use them for weed control. Weeds need sun for growth, just like any other plant. When you put newspaper over them, they suffocate from lack of sunlight. Newspapers break down nicely over time to become part of the compost. In order to improve its attractiveness, add one mulch layer.

One odd but apparently useful tip for growing organic plants, is to lightly brush your plants with your fingers or a piece of cardboard 1-2 times a day. This sounds like total nonsense, but there is research suggesting that it does promote plant growth relative to unpetted plants.

Create a raised bed for your garden out of stone, bricks or untreated wood. If you choose to use wood to construct your bed, choose a species that is naturally resistant to rot and avoid treated wood entirely. Cypress, locust and cedar usually work best. If you use treated wood in your vegetable garden, the chemicals in the wood can make their way into the soil, and in turn, to your crops. If you have used treated lumber, line your beds with plastic.

The tips above have shown you that there is a noticeable difference in the quality of produce produced by organic gardening. It takes a lot of work and tons of patience, but it is all worth it in the end to have a successful organic garden.
